How do you know if you’re dealing with a sinus infection?
These days we know that dealing with a runny nose and nasal congestion could have you concerned about the coronavirus; however, it could just be a simple sinus infection. In fact, about 1 out of every 7 adults in the US deal with sinusitis, which equates to more than 30 million people each year. From the office of our Montgomery, AL, ENT doctors Dr. Wallace Vaughan, Jr. and Elliott Morgan, here are the symptoms of sinusitis and signs it’s time to see a professional.
Signs and Symptoms of Sinusitis
Wondering if you are dealing with a sinus infection? A sinus infection is most often going to cause,
- Nasal congestion
- Facial pain and pressure
- Runny nose or a stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Post-nasal drip
- Referred pain (often in the upper teeth)
Some people are more prone to sinus infections. For example, smokers and those with seasonal allergies are more likely to deal with sinusitis. If you’ve recently recovered from a cold you are also more at risk for developing a sinus infection.
Seeing an ENT Doctor
You may want to come into our Montgomery, AL, office for an evaluation with one of our otolaryngologists if,
- You are dealing with severe pain, headaches, or facial pressure
- Your symptoms are getting worse

- You have a fever that lasts more than 72 hours
If you also deal with several sinus infections each year then it’s also time to consult our ENT team to find out why you’re dealing with recurring infections and what you can do to get them under control.
You’ll be happy to read that most of the time your sinus infection will go away on its own without medication or medical intervention; however, our ENT doctors can recommend certain home care methods and over the counter medications to help alleviate sinus symptoms. You may want to use,
- Nasal sprays
- Cough suppressants
- Warm compresses
- Neti pot
- Warm steams
