Hearing loss could occur for various reasons and at ay point in your life. But since it tends to occur gradually, there’s a chance that you might not notice it immediately. With this in mind, below are hearing loss warning signs that you should tell your doctor at Central Alabama ENT Associates as soon as possible

Warning Signs in Adults

You might be developing hearing loss if you’re experiencing two or more of these symptoms:

  • Constantly asking others to repeat what they’ve just said
  • Trouble following a conversation if more than one person is talking simultaneously
  • Straining to understand or completely misunderstanding things that are said to you
  • Dizziness, and/or ringing or pain in your ears
  • People complaining that the volume of what you’re listening to or watching is too loud
  • Thinking that other individuals are always mumbling
  • Difficulty hearing people talk over the phone
  • Trouble hearing conversations in noisy environments

Red Flags in Children

Younger individuals usually don’t realize that their healing is off or might not have the ability to tell you exactly what they are feeling. That being said, here are warning signs to look out for that might indicate reduced hearing:

  • Responding to sound inconsistently
  • Unclear speech
  • A speech or language delay
  • Not responding when calling them
  • Unable to follow instructions
  • Watching a video or listening to music with the volume turned up high

How to Manage Hearing Loss

Once you start to experience the hearing loss symptoms mentioned above, visit your doctor in Montgomery, AL, for a checkup immediately. Your doctor can find out what’s causing your hearing loss and recommend the best ways to treat and manage your condition. Meanwhile, help yourself with the following tips:

  • Tell your family and friends that you’re having difficulty hearing them so they’ll be able to offer you support.
  • Ask people to talk more slowly and loudly.
  • Ask people to face you when conversing with you. Understanding what they’re communicating may be easier if you can clearly see their body language, lips, and expressions.
  • Refrain from exposing yourself to background noise whenever possible. Opt for a quiet environment when going out and bring noise-canceling earplugs or headphones as a backup.

Types of Hearing Loss

There are several types of hearing loss, each one associated with damage to specific areas of the ear. Types of hearing loss include:

  • Conductive: Associated with damage to the eardrum, middle ear, or ear canal, this hearing loss can be the result of ear fluid in the middle ear, a punctured eardrum, an ear infection, allergies, or congenital abnormalities in the ear.
  • Sensorineural: Associated with damage to the inner ear and auditory nerve. This can be due to aging, a viral infection, head injuries, disease, genetics, or exposure to loud noises.
  • Mixed: Associated with damage to the inner, middle, or outer ear. The damage results in both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss.
  • Central: Sometimes referred to as central auditory processing disorder. This type of hearing loss is caused by the failure of the central nervous system to send the brain recognizable signals.

Treatments for Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can be treated in several ways. The type of treatment used will depend on the specific type and extent of hearing loss, as well as the cause of it. At our office in Montgomery, hearing loss can be treated with antibiotics, corticosteroids, ear tubes, hearing aids, myringotomy, or surgery. Our doctors can discuss appropriate treatment options with you.

Preventing Hearing Loss

It might not be possible to completely prevent hearing gloss, particularly the type that develops with aging, however, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself. Some ways to do this is to minimize your exposure to loud noises and to wear earplugs or another type of protection for your ears, especially if you work in a noisy environment or plan to attend a concert.

It is also best to seek treatment for sinus or ear infections when they occur to prevent infection-related hearing loss. Additionally, regularly scheduling visits with an ear, nose and throat specialist is extremely helpful. After all, having your ears regularly examined makes it possible to detect problems early on before they progress and lead to major hearing loss.
